CSRG Annual 1st Event, Infineon Raceway, March 25, 2006

One the last Saturday in March I brought my RP-24 to Cypresslane Racing at Infineon Raceway, to have the suspension aligned.  That same weekend the Classic Sports Racings Group had their season opener.  So I stayed around an took the following pictures.  It was  low keyed event, but some interesting machinery was present.

Bourgeault Formula Junior, 1958

Simon Favre, driver/ owner, works on his 1958 Bourgeault Formula Junior.  The Fiat badge on this car caught my attention.  At first I thought this car was an import from Europe, but was informed that it was actually built in Sausalito, Ca.  This particular vehicle was once driven by Nick Reynolds of the Kingston Trio.

The Bourgeault is powered by a four cyclinder 1100 cc motor, the same type as that used in the Fiat 1100 of the 1950s.  The transaxle is from an early, pre 1955, Porsche unit, modified to have double-jointed axles. The case for this transaxle is a VW splitcase with Porsche gears, making it indistinguishable from a Porsche unit.   The olive oil can is to part of the transaxle vent system.  VW transaxles will blow the input shaft seal out if you don't vent them (as I learned the hardway on my Royale RP24). The flywheel is a custom Aluminum job with a Fiat ring gear and a VW clutch.  Note the cable snaking through the engine compartment.  Where most formula cars use hydraulics and a slave cylinder, the Bourgeault used a cable is to operate the clutch.

The first Formula Jrs,  built in the late 1950s used many Fiat parts. Once Lotus and Cooper became involved, it was pretty much over for the Italian builders.  Bourgeault was an oddball who started early, which is why he used the Fiat motor, but he fiddled around with the car too long so that by the time it first raced, it was already obsolete.

I'd like to thank owner Simon Favre for providing me with the information presented here.

The Ginetta G4RC was a tube frame, fiber glass bodied kit car.  Over 500 of these cars were produced from 1961 to 1960.

Jaguar C-Type, 1958

Image Image

Jaguar stopped building the C-Type in 1953.  This particular is a very faithful copy of the C-Type.  This vehicle was built using the same tubular steel chassis and aluminum bodywork as the original.   Even the various components which go into the assembly are original Jaguar parts, from that era, or near exact copies.  The assembly and workmanship is so close to that of the original C-Type, that this car is eligible for entry into vintage events such as the Mille Miglia.

A company in England builds these, using original Jaguar chassis from the 1950s as a starting point.  The chassis and motor for this car were originally a 1958 XK-150, which explains its production year designation 1958.

Legrand Mk I, Formula Four, 1963

One of the more unusual formula cars was this Formula-4, Legrand Mk I .   This class was an outgrowth of the Formula-3 class.  Formula-3 was Formula-500 in Europe which is what Stirling Moss began his racing career with.  Formula-4 did not last long as it was overtaken by Formula Junior.  For vintage events, this car is classed with the Formula Juniors.

TheLegrand Mk I is powered by an air cooled BMW 700 engine.  The motor for this car powered the BMW 700 automobile manufactured btween 1959 and early 1965.  This same motor was also used in a motorcycle BMW Produced.

Jerry Burr, right, discusses the status of his Legrand with a spectator.  Jerry withdrew from his race because of fluctuating oil pressure readings as the car negogiated the course.  Later it was determined that the fluctuating oil pressure was due to a oil pickup problem, but the behavior was typical for this motor.

This Formula One Lotus was formerly driven by Mario Andretti.  At a previous event, Mario Antretti had autographed an aluminum panel, just forward of the instrument cluster.  Unfortunately this car was not entered in this event.  It was present to be inspected by the FIA to certify it to run in FIA Sanctioned Historic Events in Europe.
